Canadian Team Joins "Knock Out" Competition

Dr. Geoff Hicks, director of the Manitoba Institute of Cell Biology (Winnipeg, MN), will co-lead a team in the Canadian component of the International Knockout Mouse Project, a venture to build a comprehensive and publicly available resource of mutations in the mouse genome.

By "knocking out" the function in each of the approximately 20,000 genes in the mouse genome, researchers will be able to determine the role of each gene in physiology and development.

Dr. Hicks will co-lead the North American Conditional Mouse Mutagenesis Project, supported by Genome Prairie with funding of $13.5 million from Genome Canada and other partners. Canadian co-funding partners include the provinces of Manitoba and Alberta, the Canada Foundation for Innovation and Cryolab. The Manitoba institute is a joint venture between the University of Manitoba and CancerCare Manitoba.

Other participants in the international project include the European Conditional Mouse Mutagenesis Program and the Knockout Mouse Project funded by the US National Institutes of Health.
